Etymology[edit]

Presumably from Proto-Germanic *matjô, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *met- (to cut). Cognate with Sanskrit मत्य (matyà, harrow, roller, club), Proto-Slavic *motyka (hoe), Lithuanian matikkas (mattock), Latin mateola (mallet).
