Etymology[edit]

From *ɛ́- +‎ *ɣɪ̃, perhaps the root *ɣɪ̃ is related to the term yín (to lay an egg). Proposed by Westerman to be derived from Proto-Volta-Congo *-gi- or perhaps Proto-Volta-Congo *-ji-, compare with Ayere eja, Nupe ezhì, Idoma aji, Fon azìn, Ebira àjè, Oko-Eni-Osayen éjí. For Volta-Congo languages see, Proto-Bantu *ìgɪ́, Dagbani galli
