@Victar: I don't understand the formation of the derivative گوشْت (gušt). Do you know what is Bailey's -šta or -šti supposed to be? Vahag (talk) 11:29, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Vahagn Petrosyan: Never seen this alleged suffix before, *gawštaH. --{{victar|talk}} 02:47, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. As usual, the field has not progressed since Hübschmann's 19th century remark. Sad. Vahag (talk) 13:35, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Not surprising. I'm tempted to simply erase the *-s/šta- suffix hypothesis. Is there an Armenian borrowing, or you just randomly interested? --{{victar|talk}} 20:17, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
No, I saw this Tweet based on Wiktionary's derivation of the Persian word from Avestan and wanted to correct our embarassing etymology. Vahag (talk) 20:44, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've not seen that theory anywhere but Younger Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬊 (gao) means both cow and meat. --{{victar|talk}} 21:27, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
They are referring to this bad etymology. Vahag (talk) 21:36, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Love the old "I was just copying it from another entry" excuse. User:Embryomystic seems to have originally added it back in 2016. --{{victar|talk}} 04:35, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
