u[edit]

This verb is given by Koebler with a -u- (-u-janan) in the stem. I have not seen this before. As far as I understand, the -u- would have prevented i-mutation in WGmc descendant forms unless they were influenced by related forms (of which only Old English had related forms: egle, etc.). I added the alternative form with -i- (-ijanan), which is the better reconstruction? Leasnam (talk) 22:48, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think you're right. -j- was also lost between vowels so this can't be right. It was probably *aglijanan. —CodeCat 02:03, 19 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Low German forms mostly require an older *ai, but I suppose I could have sprung secondarily through influence of the palatalised g. The k which also developed in Low German would be through merger with the word in Dutch akelig, likely from *akaną. 90.186.170.208 13:42, 16 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
