Surely the word "to lift" was *hafjaną, right? The dictionaries are agreed that the original Old High German inflection was heffen, huob, gihaban, and -b- was only later spread to the present (as in schlagen etc.). Online Etymological Dictionary says so too, as does Philippa "Etym. Woordenboek". 78.55.74.253 19:40, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
