English "cue"

[edit]

Is the English word "cue" (as in a pool/billiards cue) related to this Proto-Indo-European term? 173.88.246.138 02:06, 24 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

That term comes from Latin cauda (tail). According to:
  • De Vaan, Michiel (2008) “cauda”, in Etymological Dictionary of Latin and the other Italic Languages (Leiden Indo-European Etymological Dictionary Series; 7), Leiden, Boston: Brill, →ISBN, page 99
It is from a PIE root given as *keh2-u-d- relating to cleaving and separating.
In that same source, it also says "cauda can be derived from the same root as the verb cūdō" (i.e., the very root here). So it seems to be something experts consider possible. You could consult other sources though. 70.172.194.25 02:14, 24 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
