Impossible etymology[edit]

Slavic *likъ cannot come directly from Germanic *laikaz. If it did, the Slavic form would have sounded *lěkъ. This derivation is simply dubious. I'll point that Derksen "Etymological Dictionary of Slavic Inherited Lexicon" gives Sl. līce < pIE lik-yom with cognate OIr. lecca, as an alternative.

There are two words "likъ": one meaning "appearance, face" about which you write (connected to "lice") and another one meaning "dance", which semantically connects to Gothic "laiks". The latter is probably borrowed (may be as *lěkъ and then changed to *likъ due to confusion or something else), while the former is inherited. --178.46.96.123 10:43, 26 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
The problem pointed out above is that such a change would be unusual and unexplained. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 02:23, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
