Walhaland alts

[edit]

Hi ! The original formation appears to have been composed of walh + land "foreigner land". OHG Walholant/Walaho lant is a formation from the plural genitive of walh/walah "foreigner", hence "foreigners' land". Dutch and MLG formations with the -n (e.g. Walenlant) appear to be re-modelled formations conforming the first element to the plural genitive, so I think *Walhanland should be removed.

The other alt I added, *Walhanōland, was an attempt to justify the -n forms by deriving them from a weak genitive plural, but again as above, I think these should be removed (I was mistakingly thinking that walaho was a weak noun). They are not inherited with the -n, and should only show in the Descendants list. Leasnam (talk) 17:30, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Leasnam: Like with an-stems, I believe the internal thematic vowel would be -a(n)- (> NSG -ą-), see *mahō, *swihaniskaz, *lunganjō. I would further venture to guess that any forms with -o- actually derive from *Walhō land. --Skiulinamo (talk) 19:33, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

With no direct Germanic cognates, this reconstruction should be relegated to the etymology of OF Gaule. --Skiulinamo (talk) 00:39, 11 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

I've added the Old High German and Middle Low German. Leasnam (talk) 06:11, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Leasnam: Cool, thanks! RFD stuck. --Skiulinamo (talk) 09:23, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
No worries. Came across OE and ON and added those to boot. Leasnam (talk) 17:02, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
