Similar to my comment on playful, "famine" is pronouned /ˈfæmən/ in Australian and American English. It's possible that in British RP it could be /ˈfæmɪn/ since many (but perhaps not all) unstressed final syllables are /ɪ/ in RP and /ə/ in most other varieties of English. "Chicken" and "-ed" for past tense/participle are definite known cases of this, for instance. — Hippietrail 13:16, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- My Macquarie dictionary gives /ˈfæmən/ but both it and /ˈfæmɪn/ get Google hits, even from American sources. Sadly, my OED is pre-IPA so isn't much help. — Hippietrail 02:47, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
