Borrowing from 18th century (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Dutch Schabbelun, from earlier (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German schampeliōn, schaplūn, meaning pattern, shape, or model, ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old French eschandillon (standard) (see échantillon). Cognate with Dutch sjabloon.
