Named after the American botanist Lewis David de Schweinitz (1780-1834).

- (obsolete) A taxonomic genus within the family Ericaceae – a single species of gamopetalous plant of the Indian pipe subfamily, the sweet pinesap or Carolina beechdrops, now Monotropsis odorata.
