Etymology[edit]

From Arabic سِرَانْدِيب(sirāndīb), from Persian سراندیپ(serândip), from Pali Sīhaḷadīpa and Sanskrit सिंहलद्वीप (siṃhaladvīpa, island of the Sinhala people). See Sīhaḷa (Sri Lanka), dīpa (island) in Pali; and सिंहल (siṃhala, Sri Lanka), द्वीप (dvīpa, island) in Sanskrit.
