Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Arabic سِنْدِبَاد (sindibād), from Middle Persian (compare Persian سندباد (sendbâd)), possibly borrowed from Sanskrit सिद्धपथ (siddhapatha, path of the Blessed).

According to folk etymology, from سند (send) +‎ باد (bâd), whence also the Arabic هِنْدِبَاد (hindibād).
