From Middle High German stiege, from Old High German stiega, a byform of related (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German stega (> Middle High German stëge, > German Stege), probably from Proto-Germanic *stigǭ, *stigō, *stigiz, *stiguz (path; way; staircase; ladder). Related to stair.
