Vasmer gives a second hand opinion it could come from 白花, but looking at English pekoe and linked Wikipedia article I wonder if 白毫 (白毫銀針, cf. w:ru:Байхао Иньчжэнь) wouldn't be a more likely origin — mwgamera (talk) 06:49, 14 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

I would like to add that in Краткий русско-китайский словарь около 16000 слов, сост. Я.Б.Палей и В.К.Юстов, издание четвертое, переработанное, ГИЗ иностр. и нац. слов, Москва 1963, there is an entry that says ба́йховый: 〜 чай 白毫茶 báihaochá. Of course, it supposed to be a translation, not a claim about etymology, but it aligns with my earlier guess. — mwgamera (talk) 06:31, 2 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
