Kazachstan

[edit]

Is this word related to the root of Kazachstan? 77.175.64.145 21:53, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

It seems it is, from a long time ago. Correction, it's "Kazakhstan". In the Old East Slavic козакъ (kozakŭ) meant worker, farmhand, peon. Later changed to козак and казак. According to an etymological dictionary, it was borrowed from Crimean Tatar word for "free". --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 23:12, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
