@Per utramque cavernam: The old paradigm as given in Zaliznyak is оте́чьство – о́тчествъ. Stems with V-∅ ~ ∅-V alternation from Havlík’s law have typically undergone levelling in various directions, e.g. швец — шевца → швец — швеца (compare Ukrainian швець — шевця), in this case resulting in a doublet, although the semantic differentiation is late and отчество formerly had the (older) sense ‘homeland’ as well.
