In all likelihood a calque of something. Probably Latin subscribere, either through French souscrire or German unterschreiben. We do give the same sense for Ancient Greek ὑπογράφω (hupográphō), but Modern Greek υπογράφω (ypográfo) says it's also a western calque. 92.218.236.40 21:38, 14 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
