@Atitarev, Cinemantique, Wikitiki89, Wanjuscha, Per utramque cavernam, Guldrelokk (1) Is the comparative really "rare and awkward", as Zaliznyak says? (2) How are хлёстче and хлестче pronounced? The current entry for похлестче specifically notes it as having the pronunciation похле́щче, but Ivanova gives only (по)хлеще and (по)хлёще as possibilities. @Benwing2: Let's just keep "похле́ще", my mistake, sorry.
Not sure about "awkward". The form "похлестче" is quite common and has additional meanings, similar to "worse". Compare to "хуже", which is a comparative of both "плохо" and "худо". "похлестче" is common but I can't say the same about the other three: хлёстче, похлёстче and "хлестче". They may be "awkward" but they are attestable. --Anatoli T.
