Ajarian Appendix[edit]

Please check the section on ԼԱՒԱՇ in the appendix to the 4th volume of Ajarian's Etymological Dictionary for more info... Ultimately a Semitic word that came into Armenian from the Assyrian language (Aramean?). Սէրուժ (talk) 22:49, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for pointing this to me. Martirosyan mentions Ačaryan's proposal but considers it unconvincing. I did some digging around in Semitic dictionaries and found a host of similar-sounding Semitic words for “dough”. It is entirely conceivable that one of them developed the sense of “bread” and was borrowed into Armenian. --Vahag (talk) 21:26, 3 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
