For the record[edit]

غرنى (ğaranáy) is the only thing my dictionary lists as "mountainous", and the only word I know for "mountain" is غر (ğar)[Ric Laurent]20:24, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not 100% sure this is even a Pashto word -- it might well be Dari that we were taught mixed-in with the Pashto. I suspect that's really common. How do we handle words like *that*? Especially considering how interwoven the two languages are just in general... but anyway, yeah, my English-Pashto-Dari dictionary (Yarzi) definitely lists غر under Pashto and کوه under Dari. So. Not sure how to handle that...if it's used within a Pashto text, even if it's not Pashto "proper" it still seems like it should be marked under Pashto words somehow. Maybe "loanword from Dari" ? I don't think we have a way to deal with that, really, but it's a big problem in Hindustani and Marathi and the other languages in that area, too. — [Ric Laurent]20:08, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It also gets into really serious issues of prescriptivism vs. descriptivism, not to mention language/ethnic politics. HOO BOY. But my initial gut reaction is still to list them under every language they occur in, with a note saying "Loanword from X" or what have you. (I'm a descriptivist.)
