@Bhagadatta Hello, since Sanskrit खेलति (khelati) exists is the reconstruction *khel- offered by CDIAL unnecessary? I have observed several instances where CDIAL uses reconstruction even when there is a suitable Sanskrit word available as the etymon.

Also, out of curiosity what would be the Marathi equivalent of Konkani खेळ्टा (kheḷṭā) (stem + टा)?

present imperfective second-person masculine singular:

खेळतो(य)स? खेळ (stem) + त (imperfective) + ओ(य)स (second-person masculine singular)

present imperfective third-person masculine singular:

खेळतो(य)? खेळ (stem) + त (imperfective) + ओ(य) (third-person masculine singular)

Or based on the appearance alone does Konkani खेळ्टा (kheḷṭā) have any relation to Marathi खेळता (kheḷtā)? as in:

मला क्रिकेट खेळता येत नाही. (abilitative quasi-aspectual)

क्रिकेट खेळता खेळता (duplicated present participle ता)

सुरक्षेशी खेळता कामा नये. (emphatic denial, negation of पाहिजे)

@Kutchkutch: I agree: I was not aware of the existence of Sanskrit खेलति (khelati) so I went with the etymology given in other cognate words' entries. We can simply change them and derive these words from खेलति (khelati).

Konkani खेळ्टा (kheḷṭā) is the present imperfective of the first, second and third person singular and plural, although in some dialects the imperfective of the plural persons may vary. In this respect it is analogous to Marathi खेळतो(स) (kheḷto(s)), Hindi खेलता (kheltā) etc except that Marathi and Hindi have different words for different persons, whereas in Konkani Konkani खेळ्टा (kheḷṭā) alone served the purpose for all the persons.

The original suffix here is -ता (-tā) which got retroflexed to -टा (-ṭā) to agree with the retroflexed ळ (ḷa) in the stem. -- Bhagadatta (talk) 05:21, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

@Bhagadatta: Thanks! Your explanation of what the present imperfective represents in Konkani is very helpful. When I created Marathi खेळणे (kheḷṇe), I was also unaware of the existence of Sanskrit खेलति (khelati), so when the entry for Sanskrit खेलति (khelati) was created about a year later it caught my attention. Since you agree with the change from *khel- to Sanskrit खेलति (khelati), the etymologies given in the cognate words' entries could be updated eventually. Kutchkutch (talk) 07:56, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
