@Bhagadatta What would be your analysis of this Sanskrit entry? It seems to work as the etymon for Jalore / जालौर, but it’s status as the etymon as जबलपुर (jabalpur) seems unclear due to the alternate etymology of जबल (jabal) +‎ पुर (pur). With the possible exception of Bengali, the remaining descendants are probably borrowed from either Hindustani or English. Kutchkutch (talk) 11:50, 24 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Kutchkutch: I agree. The word जाबालिपुर does not appear in MW, so what I think is this might not have been part of attested Sanskrit but the name was just coined using Sanskrit elements (in this case a proper noun + पुर, a Sanskrit word). The coining may have happened at any stage MIA or early NIA and then rapidly developed as such especially if the speakers knew a bit about how these words developed (for example -pura --> -ore). Or alternatively what you say might also be true, maybe the word is जबल (mountain) + पुर and then it developed into Jalore and then re-analyzed as जाबालिपुर in New Sanskrit. -- Bhagadatta(talk) 01:22, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
