Talk:અમદાવાદ

@DerekWinters Hi! Do you know how અહમદ + આબાદ became અમદાવાદ ? Is it simply હ was deleted and બ became વ?
- Also, do you know if the name કર્ણાવતી is significant enough to mention? Kutchkutch (talk) 01:17, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Kutchkutch: I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier. I'm not too sure, because I can't find any historical forms, but, at first it would have been pronounced "ahamdaabaad" (unlike ehemdaabaad), and હ is known to be quite weak in Gujarati (I sometimes pronounce હું as ઉં when I'm lazy), which allows it to be dropped very easily. And likely, the બ went to વ from the મ right before it. Beyond that, I'm not the most sure. DerekWinters (talk) 02:08, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
- @DerekWinters: Ok, Thanks for the detailed answer!
- It appears કર્ણાવતી, named after Karna (Chaulukya dynasty), was the original name before Ahmed Shah I renamed after himself, and it has gained some popularity as an alternative to the Islamic sounding અહમદ + આબાદ, but perhaps not enough to renamed such as those mentioned at Renaming of cities in India. - @Kutchkutch: Oh certainly not for renaming. Gujaratis love Amdavad, and that's the only name we know. We either love it, or love to make fun of it. DerekWinters (talk) 02:37, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
- Reminds me of the proposed renaming of Allahabad to Prayag. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करें • योगदान) 22:32, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
