Why I put the Thai term

I think English translation for this term depends on how we interpret Thai กระเจี๊ยบ (grà-jíiap) appearing in the sources. First, อนุสรณ์ สถานนท์ (1984) gives two definitions, one of which is unambiguous กระเจี๊ยบมอญ (grà-jíiap-mɔɔn, okra) (how curious it is that its literal translation is “Mon(s') krachiap”!). I have not yet managed to identify the other in terms of both spelling and sense, but it appears to be กระเจี๊ยบเม็ด (krachiap of seeds/grains(?)). Second, Sakamoto (1994) shows กระเจี๊ยบ as medium for the sense “roselle” in Japanese, but I suspect that his late informant meant “okra” also as in the other source. As I have written in the entry, source of scientific names given by Sakamoto is a Thai-Japanese dictionary (Tomita 1987), but I am somewhat dubious about alleged Tomita's translation since searching through Google Images showed me pictures of roselles with กระเจี๊ยบ followed by adjectives such as เปรี้ยว (bprîao, sour) and แดง (dɛɛng, red) in most cases, i.e. กระเจี๊ยบเปรี้ยว and กระเจี๊ยบแดง. @Octahedron80, GinGlaep, do you call roselle กระเจี๊ยบ without any modifier and even except for the case of น้ำกระเจี๊ยบ? --Eryk Kij (talk) 19:53, 25 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
