On Etymology

[edit]

@Vahagn Petrosyan, Hey! Do you, by any chance, know a etymological dictionary for Georgian (not like Klimov etc) and that doesn't only focus on Arabic and Persian lexicon (I know Acaryan focuses mostly on Armenian <-> Georgian) but like for this, I'm sure it's ultimately from Proto-Semitic, but the metathesis is weird. We wouldn't have such metathesis in Georgian. Metaknowledge compared it to Berber's metathesis (cf. Kabyle alɣem). Would you happen to have a source for this? Sorry for asking for this. I'll try to find it too in Georgian sources. Thank you! -Solarkoid (talk) 20:32, 11 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Solarkoid: I have not heard about any etymological dictionary of Georgian. It probably does not exist. Regarding this word, I added what I could. The route of derivation and the sound alterations are unclear to me. --Vahag (talk) 11:29, 12 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the additional sources. To correct you though, we do have Etymological Dictionary of the Kartvelian Languages which does have Georgian etymologies, but obviously it doesn't deal with Georgian borrowings. --{{victar|talk}} 16:37, 12 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Solarkoid was asking about non-Klimov-type dictionaries. Sadly, their Ačaṙyan has not been born yet. --Vahag (talk) 16:49, 12 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
