@Vahagn_Petrosyan: am I overcomplicating things in etymology? I'm not sure how else this shift in meaning could happen. The plants don't look that similar. My reasoning is "it's kind of reddish". :)

Also, archive.org messed up my OCR which I already did locally. :/ კვარია (talk) 14:55, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@კვარია: Being a city boy, I am not good at plants. But what unites these plants and also the Jerusalem artichoke is probably their edible roots. Kabardian щӏэрыкӏуэ (śʼɛrəkʷʼɛ) is sometimes glossed as "beet".
PS. Are you using the standard kat.traineddata module of Tesseract for OCR? Vahag (talk) 16:05, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So I guess it's safe to simplify the etymology down to a "Borrowed from Georgian"?
Yep, I am. It's decent enough. I uploaded the file with OCR already, without knowning that archive.org did automatically, and it tried to use Russian+Hebrew+English, thus overwriting the data that was already there. კვარია (talk) 16:11, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It is better not to discuss the sense development unless we have an exact typological parallel or unless we know the cultural history of the plant.
On archive.org, click "Edit" on the left panel, choose "I want to change the information (metadata) about my item", set the language to "geo", click "Submit" and see what happens. Vahag (talk) 17:56, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@კვარია, do you know a Tesseract module for OCRing pre-reform Russian? Vahag (talk) 21:48, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. I only had to scan pre-reform Russian once and kind of winged it with modern Russian which led to horrible results კვარია (talk) 21:58, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
