Russian borrowing

[edit]

@Gubazes, are direct Russian borrowings in Laz possible? If so, I propose to derive this from Russian халатный (xalatnyj). Vahag (talk) 20:46, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure if some trading-related words or maybe in eastern dialects could be possible, but Kojima lists this as a Vizha dialect word, so it's hard to tell. The only Russian borrowing I can think of right now is სიმიშქა (simişka, sunflower) from се́мечко (sémečko) and that word exists in dialectal Turkish(Kars according to TDK). I didn't find a similar word in other languages of the area, so the similarity with Russian can be accidental. This may be a derivative of ხალატი (xalaťi, rope) with some unexplained sense development, perhaps as in English ropy. Vahag (talk) 22:44, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
