Pronunciation

@Metaknowledge There is a phonemic contrast in Coptic between initial /uC/ and initial /wC/. For instance, ⲟⲩⲧⲁϩ /uˈtah/ becomes ⲡⲟⲩⲧⲁϩ /puˈtah/ when prefixed with the definite article. Among the dialectal cognates of ⲟⲩⲧⲁϩ, Akhmimic ⲉⲧⲁϩ features an initial reduced vowel. Definite ⲡⲉⲩϩⲟⲣ on the other hand shows that ⲟⲩϩⲟⲣ featured an initial consonant cluster. Accordingly, all dialects have initial ⲟⲩ- here. It may have been realized phonetically as [uˈhɔr] when standing alone (though monosyllabic [whɔr] is equally possible), but these are phonological transcriptions.
