Pronunciation[edit]
I was told that, in southern China, if 莲蓬 were pronounced with 輕聲, 蓮蓬 might easily be confused with 臉盆. May be a clue to a regional variant pronunciation where the original tone is preserved; not really sure. In XDHYCD7 pg 809, XDHYGFCD3 pg 813, XDHYCD6 pg 805, XDHYCD5 pg 846 & XDHYGFCD2 pg 819, this is a 輕聲詞. Also, the Oct 1977 version of Xiandai Hanyu Cidian has 蓮蓬 as a 輕聲詞.[1] Were there ever any changes to this word's official status as a 輕聲詞 in other dictionaries?
