Which kingdom does it really refer to?[edit]
Does 高麗 mean "Goguryeo" or "Goryeo"? These were two different kingdoms that existed at different times. 173.89.236.187 18:31, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
- For Japanese, older terminology about the various polities on the Korean Peninsula is often less specific than that. 高麗 (Koma) as a standalone noun may refer to 1) Goguryeo, 2) the Korean peninsula in general, or 3) an area in the Sōraku District in the south of Kyoto Prefecture. As a prefix, 高麗 (Koma) refers to things originally brought over to Japan from the Korean Peninsula.
- Note too that 高麗 (Kōrai), spelled the same but pronounced differently, refers to 1) Goryeo, 2) the Korean peninsula in general, or 3) textiles originally imported from the Goryeo kingdom.
