Derivation[edit]

How is this related to 엄마 (eomma, “mom, mommy”)? It looks like 엄마 (eomma) + suffixing element (ni). ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 02:40, 28 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Eirikr They are Synonyms. 엄마 is a colloquial expression and 어머니 is an honorific expression. B2V22BHARAT (talk) 03:37, 28 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@B2V22BHARAT: I think User:Eirikr is asking about the etymology 어머니 = 엄마 + 니 (with a phonetic change)?, not the meaning. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 03:54, 28 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Eirikr Yeah, your hypothesis might be right. You can use naver.com and google.com to search for etymology. Also 나무위키 has a lot of rare information about Korean words, too. Hope this helps. Sincerely, B2V22BHARAT (talk) 04:02, 28 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Anatoli and B2V22BHARAT. Indeed, I'm more interested in the derivations / etymologies. I cannot tell if 어머니 (eomeoni) is from 엄마 + 니, or if 엄마 (eomma) is from 어머니 - 니: is this an additive compound, or an elided abbreviation?
