"What made name Brian to move out of the top hundred names for boys (presumably in England) in or before 1994?" The frequency peak of Brian in England and Wales was in the 1950s, so it was automatically out of fashion by 1994. Breton origin of Irish name

I don't see any evidence the Irish version of this name is derived from Breton, there is evidence (e.g. Brión mac Echach Muigmedóin) of variants of this name in Irish from the 4/5th century CE, a period when Breton probably did not even exist yet, and even if it did, what evidence is there of enough contact? What other Breton names entered Irish at this time? It is more likely that either the name independently developed in both place or that the name is derived from something in protoceltic. I've brought this up at Wiktionary:Etymology_scriptorium/2022/July#Brian. It seems Brian and Brión are distinct names. The evidence I could find last August was that Brian Boru was the first bearer in Ireland and got it from Breton through his family's mercantile contact with Brittany. - -sche (discuss) 18:08, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
