Father[edit]

@Vahagn Petrosyan, Fay Freak: Hi. The first part "father" is no longer used in Maltese. I can't find a cognate of Arabic أَب (ʔab, father) or أَبُو‎ (ʔabū) in Maltese. Also, why is it capitalised? --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 08:39, 4 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

I think I found it [1] says that the Maltese Semitic bu from the Arabic construct form أَبُو‎ (ʔabū) only appears in combinations, mainly surnames and placenames. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 08:54, 4 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Anatoli, it's capitalized in Maltese, because it is a surname. --Vahag (talk) 11:53, 4 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I didn't know it was also a surname in Maltese. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 13:02, 4 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Anatoli, your questions are surprising. Of course it is a surname in Maltese, the etymology made you know it, and a search engine would make you know it as fast. Also it is not hard to see that a word like “father” leaves its traces somewhere, be it obsolete or not – now that much historically you can think! أَبُو‎ (ʔabū) is constantly and universally in the Arabic dialects of yore and today used in proper names, plant names, animal names. I knew it should be there somewhere but I couldn't find quickly, so asked for help to find it quicker, also hoping to see the actual etymology source. I don't know Maltese well enough but know that Maltese deviated heavily from Arabic, I wouldn't be surprised if many Arabic roots don't have any traces in modern or old Maltese. A stupid question is the one we don't ask. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 14:08, 4 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
