Etymology of Qiqihar
[edit]The Etymology scriptorium or someone who knows more should eventually look at the issue of the origin of the word 'Qiqihar'. As with 'Harbin' (a word which, in that case, predates the PRC government), 'Qiqihar' does not originate with Mandarin Chinese Hanyu Pinyin but instead a romanization from Manchu or Mongolian or some other language. Note that Qiqiha'er/Qiqihaer is the Hanyu Pinyin derived name. I think many people assume that the "e" in 'Qiqiha'er' is being omitted in 'Qiqihar' like we see in 'wánr', and hence that 'Qiqihar' is Hanyu Pinyin. Counterexample: Tai'erzhuang isn't called "Tairzhuang" anywhere. Did Manchu have a SASM/GNC romanization? To analogize: Ürümqi /is/ to post-1979 PRC official romanization of Uyghur /as/ Qiqihar /is/ to post-1979 PRC official romanization of Manchu/Mongolian/something.
