A calque?[edit]
@Gabbe, do you know if this is a calque from German, perhaps mediated via Danish? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 22:43, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
- I don't know, no. The only source I have on its etymology is SAOB (linked in the article), which says
jfr d. arvefjende, nt. ervfiind, t. erbfeind, holl. erfvijand; se ARF, sbst.1, o. FIENDE
- That is, it says that the word is a compound of arv and fiende. It also says that we can compare ('jfr' = jämför) with similar words in related languages. It doesn't take a stand on whether it is a calque of any of them, or an independent formation. Gabbe (talk) 05:44, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Gabbe, many historic or etymological dictionaries are somewhat lacking in detecting, investigating or mentioning calques unfortunately. However, this word has been dated to the sixteenth century (SAOB), which means that Middle Low German is a contender as well. It seems to have existed in both Middle Low German (as ervevīent) and Middle High German. But I would agree that the issue remains uncertain.
