look away[edit]

Encarta dictionary defines it as "2. look away", instead of turn away/aside (from) (one's gaze, the eyes, etc.) --Backinstadiums (talk) 18:49, 4 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Endemic misuse on TVTropes[edit]

Interestingly, the popular TVTropes site seems to use this word throughout instead of "avoid". A writer who does not use a trope at all (i.e. avoids its use) is said to "avert" it (incorrect, since they are not turning it away). Equinox 17:33, 31 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

"...in fact, it might even be better for aversions to simply be called avoidances, were it not for the enormous hassle such a change would be for this site..." - Administrivia/NotASubversion
(one might offer counterlogic that when a writer is averting a trope it's warded off from the script, though another scenario fitting this is when a trope is Defied by a character in the work.) Andrewthewikipedian (talk) 14:24, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
