of Turkic origin, maybe?

[edit]

Could it be a borrowing from Turkic languages, whence kinda similar to Turkish baykuş. Perhaps an Oghur borrowing? Ardahan Karabağ (talk) 14:02, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Ardahan Karabağ The sources I have available do not mention a Turkic origin. The latest etymology dictionary says it is of uncertain origin, perhaps a derived term from the Hungarian verb búg. See bagoly in Károly Gerstner, editor, Új magyar etimológiai szótár [New Etymological Dictionary of Hungarian] (ÚESz.), Online edition (beta version), Budapest: MTA Research Institute for Linguistics / Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics, 2011–2024.
