Etymology for the lovelock (hairstyle) sense

Hotten's Slang Dictionary explains these as something "wherewith to draw the belles", i.e. attract woman. I am sceptical: some of Hotten's etys smell a bit folky, and this hairstyle might well just be likened to a bell rope in a church. Equinox ◑ 14:45, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
