Regarding the parentheses around ə

Is it necessary to have parentheses around the schwa, as in /ˈkæ.ɹə.m(ə)l/? That is, is there a slight difference in pronunciation between the two? I'm new to IPA, so I'm just curious. Thanks in advance! BirdHopper (talk) 16:15, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
