Chambers 1908 further distinguishes the religious garment, in two senses: "1. a long loose black robe or outer coat, formerly in common wear, but now worn only by clergy and choristers; 2. a shorter garment, usually of black silk, worn under the Geneva gown by Scotch ministers."
