Dubious Etymology[edit]

How could Finnish borrow from a language that is geographically quite far away? -kko is a quite common adjectival suffix, and the presence of simply /er/ in both languages does not represent a connection between both words. 72.48.245.90 03:00, 8 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

The same way it came to be written in a alphabet from equally far away. Borrowings from classical languages can be found throughout Europe and beyond, so having one in Finnish is hardly surprising- there are currently 132 terms in Category:Finnish terms derived from Ancient Greek. That's not to say that this particular etymology is necessarily correct, but the mere fact of it being an Ancient Greek loanword in Finnish doesn't make it any less credible.
