Heliopore is glossed as "Heliopora, the sun coral", but I can't tell if these names refer to the same thing. The 'vern' link goes to Tubastraea, which claims that the genus is called sun coral. I briefly skimmed a couple of papers on Tubastraea species and didn't see any vernacular names used, though. I also skimmed one paper on Heliopora caerulea and didn't see any vernacular names for that species, either. Cnilep (talk) 05:32, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
- The Century Dictionary from 1889 identifies the noun heliopore (there is also an adjectival sense) as “A sun-coral; a member of the genus Heliopora or family Helioporidæ.” Vernacular names are often polysemic; just consider all the species called snapper or grouper. This ancient text on geology uses the term “sun coral” for Heliolites, am extinct genus of tabulate corals assumed to be an ancestor of Heliopora. And this book identifies the terms “blue coral”, “sun coral” and “heliopora”. The attribute “blue” is the English analogon of the specific epithet caerulea. --Lambiam 11:52, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
