I'm not a native English speaker but I have this vague idea that the word impending has something rather gloomy and threatening about it, is it so? 88.148.214.22 20:44, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Erm, it can in some cases. Think, for example, of a sentence something like this:

What is impending is imminent (in the literal sense of the word, “hanging over one’s head”) and harmful; the slipshod extension threatens to deprive us of a useful word. --Backinstadiums (talk) 16:14, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
