What constitutes a kendi?[edit]

Leaving aside the question of whether there may be multiple spouts which could be question of omission, the reference I provided was quite clear that a kendi is in current use (hence no need for the archeology context marker), is not used just for holy water (tho it did originate from a vessel used for such), and does not have a handle. As for your comment about insertion through the spout, based on the reference I consulted, that sounds like a kundika, a similarly shaped vessel that is used much as you describe, and which the kendi is a relative of. In the absence of a reference which contradicts the one I located, I'm going to have to insist on reverting to my version, with a slight amendment to leave open the possibility of multiple spouts. — Carolina wren discussió 00:17, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The spout is only for pouring out, yes. The other way is indeed a kundika. — This unsigned comment was added by Wakablogger (talkcontribs) at 1:34, 9 April 2009 (UTC).
Looking at those and the reference you gave to improve the etymology [4], it is clear some writers allow restrict it to being handleless, while others use it in a broader sense that included handles. I'm still troubled by the claim of multiple spouts tho. It wouldn't seem to have any useful function (except possibly in a ritualistic use) and none of the images I've seen so far assert that claim. I'm not troubled enough by those concerns to revert or revise the entry further myself, but I may take this word to the Tea Room to get a broader discussion. — Carolina wren discussió 01:53, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think the best would be to insert a picture showing a typical one. The uſer hight Bogorm converſation 06:01, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. It has to be copyright-free, though. Can you take one? Wakablogger 19:27, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I just searched Commons and there doesn't appear to already be a picture there of one. Only thing I accomplished was to notice an empty duplicate category and nominate it for deletion. — Carolina wren discussió 20:44, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
