@RcAlex36: Thanks for spotting the resemblance. Assuming Cantonese word's MC ancestor (MC lip) had been borrowed early into Vietnamese, it could result in V. lợp; one example of (on top of my head) EMCh. *-i- > V. -ơ-, see (MC phjit) > V. thớt (classifier for some animals, mostly horses & elephants));
Meanwhile, (OC *ɡ·rɯb (ZS) / *k.rəp (B&S)) reminds me of V. rợp (to overshadow); however, OCh. *K[.]r- developed into mostly V. s- or k-/c- (/k/) or g-. Erminwin (talk) 12:18, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
