Yes, I see it occasionally, usually in war stories. OED has it cited from 1847. Our cites are more recent, but it still passes CFI. --Enginear 12:47, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

I've been bold and changed it to (UK), which I think is more likely to be correct -- it's not slang so much as a hint that the sailor is French (or from nearby countries) and it "feels" like a UK-only use (well probably England, actually, but "UK" is easier since I'm not sure). --Enginear 21:31, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
