Is this word truly derogatory? I've hear it used countless times but never as a pejorative, only jocular. ベトナム人 (talk) 03:43, 30 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

I don't know, but moonrunes is basically a synonym and we haven't marked that as derogatory. Equinox 03:44, 30 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Dictionaries mark it as derogatory, and yes, I would say that classifying a different language as so foreign and strange that it might as well come from the moon would offend its speakers a bit. I've only ever heard it used by people mocking the language rather than in a joking way. Prinsgezinde (talk) 20:05, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
It depends on the environment, context, and intent, but it's often used in jest online, especially by learners. e.g. I'm learning moonspeak to watch raw (unsubtitled) anime episodes. As for whether it's a synonym of moonrunes, the former refers to the language, while the latter refers solely to the writing system. 190.190.177.117 10:50, 12 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
