Possible verb in MUDs (multi-user dungeons)

David Crystal's Language and the Internet states that, on MUDs, "Persistent offenders may find themselves temporarily prevented from using their character (newted) or find that their character is limited in its capabilities or even completely excluded from the MUD (toaded)." The page is referenced in the glossary under "newting".

I can't find anything else about this (tried searching the Web for "got newted" etc.), or which MUD varieties may have used it. My guess at the etymology would be either from neuter (probably not) or some nerdy allusion to the Monty Python line about a witch: "She turned me into a newt... I got better!"
