Word family[edit]

This "word family" consisting of người (human being, person), ngươi (pupil), ngươi (you (derogatory)), ngài (you (honorific)) was surprisingly already mentioned in an article by Phan Khôi from 1936:

1936, Phan Khôi, “Những chữ có họ với nhau”, in (Please provide the book title or journal name):
3/ Chữ người là con người ta, sanh ra: 1. ngươi, con ngươi ta thấy trong con mắt; 2. ngươi, đại danh từ dùng để kêu con người mà địa vị thấp kém hơn mình; 3. ngài, đại danh từ dùng để kêu con người mà địa vị cao hơn mình.

Now Phan Khôi himself was no linguist and I don't think he had any training in etymology at all and his other attempts at word-linking in the same article are very much hit-or-miss with more misses than hits, but I still think it's interesting that nearly 90 years ago someone already spotted this set.
